Remembering Malika-e-Tarannum Noor Jehan on her 24th death anniversary

The 24th death anniversary of legendary singer and actress Malika-e-Tarannum Noor Jehan is being observed today, December 23. Noor Jehan, born on September 21, 1926, in Kasur, Punjab, hailed from a family of musicians, which laid the foundation for her extraordinary musical journey.
Over the span of her illustrious career, Noor Jehan recorded around 10,000 songs in multiple languages, including Urdu, Punjabi, and Sindhi, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry of Pakistan and India. Her powerful voice became a symbol of patriotism, especially during the 1965 war with India, where her songs galvanised the Pakistan Army and the public alike.
In recognition of her unparalleled contributions to music and acting, Noor Jehan was awarded numerous prestigious honors. In 1957, she received the President’s Award for her exceptional acting and singing. She was also the recipient of the Special Nigar Award, Pride of Performance, Lifetime Achievement Award, Sitara-e-Imtiaz, PTV Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Millennium Award, among others.
Beyond her musical career, Noor Jehan was also an accomplished actress, starring in a number of iconic films such as Chan Way, Dopatta, Mirza Ghalib, Qaidi, Baaji, and Khandaan. Her versatility as both a singer and an actor cemented her status as a national treasure.
Noor Jehan passed away on December 23, 2000, due to heart failure. She was laid to rest in Karachi, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
